If we can recognize our own assumptions and biases as subjective, we can bring empathy and understanding to our interactions. Businesses hoping to create a culturally competent workforce <strong>need to start by addressing systemic and structural issues within their company<\/strong>. For example, research shows that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/eriklarson\/2017\/09\/21\/new-research-diversity-inclusion-better-decision-making-at-work\/?sh=1da0a5544cbf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">inclusive teams make better business decisions up to 87% of the time<\/a>. Even more impressive, companies in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/organization\/our-insights\/why-diversity-matters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">top quartile for racial and ethnic diversity are more likely to have financial returns greater than their industry mean<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Why is diversity so integral to success? Unconscious biases typically derail good decision-making. When a diverse group works together, <strong>they can help keep each other\u2019s biases in check and make smarter decisions as a team<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. is diversifying fast, with the Census Bureau estimating that nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/data\/tables\/time-series\/demo\/popest\/2010s-national-detail.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">four out of ten Americans identify with a race other than white<\/a>. Businesses that cannot reflect these demographics will fall behind those that can. By implementing cultural competence initiatives, organizations will be able to take advantage of other perspectives and compete in a global marketplace. Businesses have been investing in cultural competence for a long time and are now seeing the fruit of their labor. Here are some of the best cultural competence examples in the workplace.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Alibaba Group<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Alibaba Group, the world\u2019s biggest e-commerce company that hosts millions of merchants and serves hundreds of millions of users. During a major shopping holiday in China, Alibaba was processing 583,000 orders per second.<\/p>\n<p>What did Alibaba Group Chairman Jack Ma call the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/business\/2017-07\/10\/content_30061241.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201csecret sauce\u201d<\/a> behind the company\u2019s success? <strong>Women.<\/strong> More than one-third of Alibaba Group\u2019s founders were women, and there remains a similar percentage in senior executive roles. Throughout the company, women represent almost 50 percent of employees.<\/p>\n<p>Research shows that <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2019\/02\/research-when-gender-diversity-makes-firms-more-productive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gender diversity leads to more innovative thinking<\/a> and better decision-making. Alibaba provides a good case study.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>L\u2019Oreal<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A Forbes Top Multinational Performer, beauty company L\u2019Or\u00e9al has a presence in 150 countries on five continents. As such, <strong>multicultural diversity is at the core of this company\u2019s success<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019Oreal has initiatives supporting employees of different genders, abilities, socio-economic origins, sexuality, and ages. In the US, L\u2019Oreal\u2019s LGBTQ employee resource group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loreal.com\/en\/articles\/commitments\/2020\/04\/03\/10\/38\/key-country-initiatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OUT@L\u2019Or\u00e9al, has won L\u2019Or\u00e9al a spot on the list of \u201cBest Places to Work for LGBTQ Employees\u201d<\/a> and obtained a 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equity Index.<\/p>\n<p>The company is also a top performer when it comes to gender equality: Women account for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loreal.com\/en\/commitments-and-responsibilities\/for-the-people\/promoting-diversity-and-inclusion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">69 percent of the workforce and 53 percent of key positions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Google<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This tech giant was in hot water over the summer when its <a href=\"https:\/\/kstatic.googleusercontent.com\/files\/25badfc6b6d1b33f3b87372ff7545d79261520d821e6ee9a82c4ab2de42a01216be2156bc5a60ae3337ffe7176d90b8b2b3000891ac6e516a650ecebf0e3f866\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2020 diversity report<\/a> fell short of expectations. The report showed that just 2.6% of the company\u2019s leadership were black, the same figure which it had reported the year before. CMO Lorraine Twohill said that she regretted being so focused on hiring diverse workers without sufficiently supporting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingweek.com\/google-diversity-inclusivity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cretention, career progression, inclusiveness.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now Google has set some big goals to boost diversity, such as expanding investments in places like Atlanta, Washington DC, Chicago, and London. It will have <strong>less innovation, less creativity, and ultimately, be less profitable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Further, a business that doesn\u2019t prioritize diversity will have a worse brand reputation and won\u2019t be able to attract top talent. Such an organization would not only have a smaller pool of potential employees to hire from. It would also have difficulty retaining employees, who will depart for a more open and inclusive environment. Why would employees want to work in a place that doesn\u2019t accept and value their differences?<\/p>\n<p>The remaining team members will be demotivated by their departing colleagues, and productivity will stay low.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to invest the time and resources in developing a culturally competent atmosphere. This is not only because doing so will help your organization to succeed. That\u2019s where <strong>cultural competence training can transform organizations<\/strong>. Training teaches how to recognize our own approach while appreciating and valuing different perspectives and different ways of communicating or behaving. Here are three key steps to cover in cultural competence training.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Awareness of Self<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The first element of cultural competence is awareness of the self and one\u2019s own culture. Once <strong>individuals see that their own perspective is subjective, they may not be as quick to judge another\u2019s<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Recognizing Norms and Values<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Next, ask people to think of an interaction that left them feeling uncomfortable.
