This means that <\/span><b>women, on average, lose more than $10,000 every year to pay discrimination<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This figure rises drastically in the case of <\/span><b>women of color<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Although both men and women are legally entitled to <\/span><b>equal pay for equal work<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, many women around the world still face <\/span><b>discrimination and pay disparity in the workplace<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And that is precisely what <\/span><b>Equal Pay Day<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aims to address.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Equal Pay Day is an <\/span><b>annual movement that raises awareness of the ongoing issue of pay disparity and the gender wage gap<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is a symbolic day that encourages citizens to fight for <\/span><b>employment equality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and stand up to <\/span><b>unfair pay practices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the United States, Equal Pay Day will be held on <\/span><b>March 14<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this year. This date represents <\/span><b>how far into the year women must work to make as much as men during the previous year<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This year\u2019s event also marks <\/span><b>60 years since President John F. Kennedy signed the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/factorialhr.com\/blog\/equal-pay-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Equal Pay Act<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was enacted to end gender-based pay discrimination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what\u2019s new this year?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The primary focus this year is to campaign for <\/span><b>more inclusive equal pay data<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Income data for many women are still not included in equal pay statistics. This is especially true for <\/span><b>migrant women, women working part-time, or those on seasonal or gig contracts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These women often work in the <\/span><b>lowest-paying essential fields<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as food service, retail, factory garment production, teaching, daycare, and domestic work. By excluding this data, <\/span><b>equal pay statistics reflect an inaccurate picture of the existing reality of gender pay discrimination<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And this needs to change.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>History of Equal Pay Day<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fight for equal pay isn\u2019t a new concept. In fact, it has been evolving for <\/span><b>well over a century<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> now. Progress has been slow, but we are gradually getting closer to gender equality in the workplace.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take a look at the history of Equal Pay Day to explain how we got to where we are today.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>1883: The first strike.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 8,000 telegraphers working for Western Union across the United States walked out on strike demanding equal pay for equal work for men and women. They also had other demands, including a pay increase and an eight-hour day. Western Union refused to cave into demands and strikers eventually return to work defeated after their funds ran out.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>1911. Teachers got equal pay.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> After a long struggle, female teachers in New York were finally granted the same pay as male teachers after a long battle with the board of education.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>1963. <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/statutes\/equal-pay-act-1963\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>The Equal Pay Act <\/b><\/a><b>is signed by President Kennedy.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The anti-discrimination law, which amended the Fair Labor Standards Act, made it illegal to pay men and women working in the same place different salaries for similar work.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>The 1970s: Women&#8217;s participation in the economy started rising<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By 1970, 50% of single women and 40% of married women were participating in the labor force. Prior to this, only 20% of all women were \u201cgainful workers\u201d. Workplace protections were enhanced with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/agencies\/oasam\/civil-rights-center\/internal\/policies\/pregnancy-discrimination#:~:text=The%20Pregnancy%20Discrimination%20Act%20of,childbirth%2C%20or%20related%20medical%20conditions.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy Discrimination Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1978 and the recognition of sexual harassment in the workplace.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>1996. The First Equal Pay Day.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The National Committee on Pay Equity organized the first Equal Pay Day (originally called \u201cNational Pay Inequity Awareness Day\u201d). The aim was to raise awareness of wage disparity and demonstrate the effects of unfair pay practices on women.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What\u2019s the goal of Equal Pay Day?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ultimate goal of Equal Pay Day is to <\/span><b>further the fight for gender equality in the workplace<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The aim is to reach a point in society where pay disparity is a thing of the past and <\/span><b>no single employer in the US follows unfair pay practices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Equal Pay Day is important because it <\/span><b>raises awareness of these issues, encourages conversations around pay equality, and reminds people that <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/factorialhr.com\/blog\/pay-parity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>pay parity<\/b><\/a><b> is still an essential goal if we are to evolve as a society<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We have already started seeing changes in legislation with new laws designed to eradicate discrimination and promote <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/factorialhr.com\/blog\/pay-transparency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pay transparency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This includes the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/factorialhr.com\/blog\/nyc-pay-transparency-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NYC Pay Transparency Law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 2022 and this year\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/factorialhr.com\/blog\/california-pay-transparency-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California Pay Transparency Law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, the US still has some way to go before both women and men receive equal pay for equal work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few specific goals of this year\u2019s Equal Pay Day:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Raise awareness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of gender inequality in the workplace and mobilize communities to take action.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Ensure continued progress<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the fight for equal pay for equal work, regardless of gender or race.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Reduce employment barriers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and promote equal opportunities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Prevent employment discrimination<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> relating to a lack of affordable childcare, paid family and medical leave, and fair and predictable scheduling. These factors often prevent women from joining and staying in the workforce.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demonstrate that <\/span><b>women have to work harder<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to establish positions in male-dominated fields.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Address the <\/span><b>biases <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that cause the gender wage gap.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>4 ways to support equal pay day<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to help the cause and support Equal Pay Day as an employer is to <\/span><b>raise awareness of the campaign in your organization<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You could even combine your efforts with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/factorialhr.com\/blog\/international-womens-day-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Women\u2019s Day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which will be held on March 8 this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are 4 ways that you and your employees can support Equal Pay Day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Hold an Equal Pay Day activity or event<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best ways to celebrate Equal Pay Day is to<\/span><b> hold an activity or event and invite all your employees to participate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This can be a geat way to get people involved in the cause. You can have fun whilst raising awareness of issues related to inequality and the gender pay gap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, you could host a <\/span><b>panel discussion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>fair pay forum<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or organize a <\/span><b>salary negotiation workshop<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to educate your employees on the difficulties that women often face in this area. Or you could hold a charity <\/span><b>Unequal Bake Sale<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where all baked goods have two prices: men pay full price and women pay an additional $10.
