Today, we’re thrilled to announce the acquisition of Empion, a Berlin-based AI-powered talent assessment platform founded by Dr. Annika von Mutius. The acquisition strengthens our continued expansion in Germany and launches candidate and employee assessments, a new capability that will benefit customers across our platform.
This is a significant step in our expansion in Germany, adding product depth while strengthening our local presence and credibility in the market. This move addresses a gap in the HR software market, where AI-driven talent assessment capabilities spanning recruitment, performance, and engagement are often delivered through third-party integrations rather than as native capabilities. By bringing Empion in-house, we’re launching candidate and employee assessments as a core, AI-powered, unified feature of our platform, without the need for bolt-on solutions.
The offering will span culture-fit assessments already part of Empion’s platform today alongside new psychometric, employee-driven, cognitive, and skills assessments.
“Germany is the most important market in Europe for workforce technology, and we want to offer businesses the most complete product by partnering with a team that already has the trust of German businesses including Deutsche Telekom, Procter & Gamble, Siemens Mobility, Raiffeisenbanken and HUK-COBURG. Empion brings exactly that, along with product depth in AI-powered talent assessment that strengthens our platform for every customer, not just those in Germany. This is also a clear signal of our ambition to be a leading AI player in Europe,” said Jordi Romero, CEO of Factorial.
Why Empion? Moving Beyond the Keyword-Matched CV
Empion, founded in 2021, currently serves German companies across all segments, from SMB to enterprise, using AI to assess talent based on factors including cultural fit, skills, and motivations, rather than relying solely on keyword-matched CVs. CEO Dr. Annika von Mutius, a board member of the KI-Bundesverband, Germany’s largest AI industry association, is a recognized voice in the national conversation on Artificial Intelligence. Von Mutius holds a PhD in mathematics and worked on AI robotics systems in San Francisco before returning to Europe to found Empion.
“We built Empion on the belief that hiring should be about fit, not keywords. We chose to join Factorial because of its scale and reach across Germany and Europe, giving us the platform to bring that approach to a much wider set of companies while staying true to the research and methodology behind it. Candidate and employee assessments are just the beginning of what that means for Factorial’s customers,” said Dr. Annika von Mutius, Founder and CEO of Empion.
What this means for customers
Existing Empion customers will see no disruption to their product experience, service availability, or existing contracts as a result of the acquisition. They will continue to receive the same products and support they rely on today. Over time, Empion’s technology and team will be fully integrated into Factorial’s candidate and employee assessments, giving customers a more connected way to manage the full talent lifecycle, from hiring through performance and engagement, in one place.
Dr. Annika von Mutius will join our leadership team in Germany. Together with the Empion team, she will lead the development of candidate and employee assessments as Empion’s technology and team are integrated into our platform.
